The shelves are full of mouthwash. Do you need one, and if so which should you choose?

Different types

TypeGood forKeep in mind
Fluoride rinseHigher cavity risk, for example with dry mouthUse at a different time from brushing
Antibacterial rinseShort periods on advice from dental careCan cause stains if used for long
Cosmetic rinseA fresher feeling in the mouthDoes not remove the cause of bad breath, see bad breath

How to use mouthwash

  • Brush first, and rinse at a different time of day. Otherwise you rinse away the fluoride from the toothpaste.
  • Choose an alcohol-free one if you have a dry mouth, because alcohol can dry it out.
  • Brushing and cleaning between your teeth always matter most.
