Tiotandvård for people aged 67+: what applies since 1 January 2026
· Sarab Koyar Salehi, Licensed dental hygienist · 4 min read

Tiotandvård (the ten percent dental care) is part of the government's dental care reform, an enhanced high-cost protection that began on 1 January 2026. It means that if you are 67 or older you pay only 10 percent of the state reference price for certain treatments. The state pays the rest, 90 percent. The aim is to lower the cost for older people and make necessary dental care more accessible. Rules and amounts can change, so always check current information with Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.
What does tiotandvård mean?
The name comes from the fact that you pay a tenth of the cost of the treatments it covers. It is important to know that it does not cover all dental care, nor always all teeth. Examinations and preventive care, for example, are not included. For those, the general dental care grant and the ordinary high-cost protection still apply.
Who is it for?
The support applies from the year you turn 67. In 2026 that means anyone who turns 67 during the year, or is already older. You do not need to apply. Dental care handles it automatically.
What do you pay?
For the treatments that are included you pay 10 percent of the reference price. The reference price is a price the state has set for each procedure. If the clinic's price is lower than the reference price, you instead pay 10 percent of the lower price. Always ask the clinic what your treatment costs and how it is calculated.
What is included in tiotandvård?
The support covers treatment of disease and pain, and reparative and rehabilitative care, meaning what you need to be able to eat, chew and speak.
| Treatment | Applies to |
|---|---|
| Fillings | All teeth |
| Root canal treatment | All teeth |
| Treatment of gum disease (periodontitis) | The whole mouth |
| Crowns, bridges and implants | The front ten teeth, up to tooth position five on each side |
What is not included
- Examinations, check-ups, investigations and X-rays.
- Preventive care, such as cleaning at a dental hygienist and tartar removal.
- Cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening.
- Prosthetic treatment further back in the mouth, after tooth position five. The ordinary rules apply to it.

Grants that apply if you are 67+
- **General dental care grant (ATB):** 600 kronor a year from the year you turn 67. According to Försäkringskassan you can save the grant until the next year and then use two grants.
- **Special dental care grant (STB):** raised to 1,000 kronor per half-year, for people with certain illnesses or conditions, for example dry mouth caused by medication or radiotherapy. Read about dry mouth.
- How long the grants can be saved can change and is described differently in different sources, so check it with Försäkringskassan.
High-cost protection for what is not included
For what is not covered, the ordinary high-cost protection applies. According to Försäkringskassan you first pay the first 3,000 kronor yourself, then 50 percent of the cost between 3,000 and 15,000 kronor, and then 15 percent above 15,000 kronor.
What does it mean if you want preventive care?
Tiotandvård makes treatment of disease cheaper, but it does not replace preventive work. Regular cleaning, advice and checking the gums can help you avoid bigger and more expensive treatment later. You can use ATB and STB for preventive care. Read more about dental care support in Sweden.
Ask us before you book
Prices are individual and depend on your needs and oral health. After an assessment you receive a cost estimate and a treatment plan to approve before treatment begins. Call or send a request, and we will tell you what applies to your treatment.
The information was checked against Försäkringskassan and the government in October 2026.
