Floss, toothpicks or interdental brushes: which should you choose?
· Sarab Koyar Salehi, Licensed dental hygienist · 1 min read

A toothbrush only reaches part of the tooth surface. To remove plaque between your teeth you need a tool, every day.
Which tool suits you?
| Tool | Good when | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Floss | The gaps are tight | Use a fresh piece of floss for each gap |
| Interdental brush | The gaps are a bit larger | The right size matters. It should slide in easily, not be forced |
| Floss holder | You find floss hard to handle | A good option if you struggle with your fingers |
| Wooden toothpick | As a complement | Some find it easiest, be careful with the gums |
How to do it
- Do it once a day, preferably in the evening.
- Be gentle. Your gums may bleed a little at first, it usually passes, see bleeding gums.
- Put toothpaste on the interdental brush if you want extra fluoride.
