How to brush your teeth properly: step by step
· Sarab Koyar Salehi, Licensed dental hygienist · 1 min read

Everyone brushes their teeth, but technique and thoroughness matter a lot. Here is a simple guide.
Step by step
- Put a pea-sized to a couple of centimetres of fluoride toothpaste on a soft brush.
- Angle the brush towards the gum line.
- Brush with small, gentle movements. Do not scrub.
- Cover every surface: the outsides, insides and biting surfaces.
- Brush your tongue gently.
- Spit out the excess but do not rinse with water. The fluoride then stays longer.
When and for how long?
| When | For how long |
|---|---|
| Morning | About two minutes |
| Evening, before bed | About two minutes, the most important one |
| After something acidic | Wait a while before brushing |
Clean between your teeth too
The toothbrush does not reach between your teeth. For that you need floss or interdental brushes, see interdental cleaning.

Frequently asked questions
Is an electric toothbrush better than a regular one?
Many people find an electric toothbrush easier to use. A regular brush works just as well with good technique. The most important thing is to be thorough.
How often should I change my toothbrush?
About every three months, or sooner if the brush looks worn.
Should I rinse after brushing?
Spit out the excess but do not rinse with water, so the fluoride stays on your teeth longer.
